Breaking Barriers in Mining Leadership
Armed with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and leadership training from the London Business School, Zikalala began her career at De Beers in 2001 as a process engineer. At De Beers, the world’s largest diamond producer and a subsidiary of Anglo American Plc, she quickly gained recognition for her expertise in process improvement and plant design.
In 2007, Zikalala became the first female General Manager at De Beers Group, overseeing Kimberley Mines. Her success continued as she took on increasing responsibilities, becoming the General Manager of Voorspoed Mine in 2010, Deputy CEO of De Beers Consolidated Mines in 2017, and Managing Director of De Beers Group Managed Operations in 2019.

Driving Growth and Record Profits at Kumba Iron Ore
Zikalala’s appointment as CEO of Kumba Iron Ore ushered in a new era of growth and transformation for the company. Her leadership has cemented Kumba’s position as Africa’s largest iron ore producer, delivering exceptional financial results that have benefitted its shareholders, including Anglo American, which holds a 70% stake in the company (224,535,915 shares).
Kumba has achieved remarkable growth, with its market capitalization surging to $6.3 billion. This is reflected in a 51.64% increase in net profit, which grew from $1.1 billion in 2022 to $1.66 billion by the fiscal year ending February 20, 2024. The company’s total assets also grew from $2.42 billion to $5.21 billion.
Championing Diversity and Inclusion
Beyond financial success, Mpumi Zikalala is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in corporate South Africa. In her role as Chairperson of Sishen Iron Ore Company (Pty) Ltd, she has championed gender equity and worked to expand opportunities for women in mining and leadership roles.
Her leadership and influence extend beyond Kumba. Zikalala has previously served as a non-executive director for the Black Management Forum and Mintek. She also chairs the Ponahalo Equal Allocation Trust and serves as a trustee at the University of Johannesburg Trust.
In recognition of her achievements, Zikalala was named one of the 2018 Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.
In 2023, Zikalala’s total compensation package of $1.49 million. She owns 12,500 shares, valued at $0.236 million.
