Google has released its Year in Search 2023 lists for Kenya, with Millicent Omanga as the top trending local personality.
Kenyan businesswoman Omanga gained attention after an undated intimate video circulated on social media, with some users claiming it was her.
Second in the list is Pastor Ezekiel, a Kenyan televangelist and founder of the New Life Prayer Centre and Church who was arrested and his church closed by the government after being linked to the Shakahola Cult massacre.
The accused was released by a Shanzu court after the prosecution completed investigations against him and recommended the closure of the case file.
Faith Kipyegon, a three-time world record holder in middle-distance running, ranked sixth on Kenyans’ top trending searches after winning World Athletics Championships titles and completing a remarkable distance double.
Also on the list is Museveni, the Ugandan president, who signed anti-LGBTQ+ law with death penalty for same-sex acts, a move that immediately drew condemnation from many Ugandans as well as widespread international outrage.
The Rugby World Cup in France dominated the sports list, followed by Al Nassr’s success with Cristiano Ronaldo and Aymeric Laporte. The English Premier League continued to dominate with games like Arsenal vs Man United and Chelsea vs Man City.
The trending education list primarily focused on higher education financing, teacher performance appraisal systems, and national examinations, with HEF portal, TPAD 2, and NEMIS being top-searched terms.
Kenyans have been searching for the deaths of former Cabinet Secretary Magoha, South African rapper Costa Titch, and Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
