Kenya Power has been granted the green light to finalize a Ksh.1.2 billion transformer procurement deal, following a ruling by the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (PPARB) that dismissed objections from two local manufacturers.
The tender, exclusively reserved for local firms, involves the supply of 3,319 distribution transformers aimed at boosting the utility’s capacity to improve electricity connections and replace faulty units.
Two bidders — Empower Transformers Ltd and Nairobi Transformers Manufacturers (E.A.) Co. Ltd — had contested the tender’s 14-day delivery requirement, arguing it unfairly favored suppliers with ready stock and raised concerns over selective communication during the process.

However, the PPARB ruled in favor of Kenya Power, citing the urgency of the procurement, public interest, and sufficient justification provided by the utility.
One of the applications was dismissed on procedural grounds, while the other failed to present convincing evidence of bias or unfair treatment.
The decision paves the way for Kenya Power to address persistent delays in electricity access and transformer replacements — critical issues for consumers affected by recent service disruptions.
