Kenya and Eritrea have reached an agreement to permanently abolish visa requirements to facilitate growth in trade and connectivity between the citizens and businesses in the two countries.
The deal was arrived at Thursday at State House Nairobi when the Eritrean Head of State Isaias Afwerki toured Kenya.
“To facilitate growth in trade and connectivity between our people and business, we have agreed to abolish the requirement of visas permanently, effective today,” said President Ruto.
Respective ministries of interior from both countries have been instructed to work on the modalities for the ratification of the directive.
President Ruto and his counterpart Afwerki are keen to bolster bilateral relations and improve people-to-people ties besides entrenching regional integration for prosperity.
To further enhance bilateral relations and regional integration, President Ruto thanked President Afwerki for his commitment to review his country’s participation in IGAD.
” I thank President Afwerki most sincerely for his commitment to review his participation in our regional organization IGAD,” said President Ruto.
According to Ruto, the move will strengthen IGAD and make it effectively respond to the needs of the region.
Kenya is soon expected to open a diplomatic mission representation in Asmara, Eritrea.
