Desperate measures! Is Moi University’s main campus on brink of collapse?

Moi University’s main campus has closed down indefinitely, suspending teaching and learning operations following a lecture’s strike in the institution that started on October 25, 2021 and lasted for three days.

The university senate management board resolved to issue a memo that directed all students to vacate from the university premises by October 28.

“At its special meeting, held on Wednesday 27th October 2021, the senate resolved to suspend teaching and learning activities at main campus indefinitely due to the industrial action by the university staff which has affected university operations,” said the Deputy Vice Chancellor  Professor Isaac Njuguna Kimengi.

Lectures at Moi University main campus had downed their tools complaining of inadequate educational materials in the institution, following Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgei’s failure to implement the  Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) for the year 2017 to 2021,  including delay of salary and allowances payment among others.

The University  Academic Staff Union (UASU), Moi university chapter had also insisted that students from the institution will not resume studies until their grievances are addressed and if no action is taken the strike will continue until the agreement is reached upon.

The strike interrupted learning activities just after a group of students joined the lectures in the demonstration, as most continuing students complained of spending more years of learning in the institution and not knowing their fate of graduation.

This is not the first time the lecturers have gone on strike with the recent one being early February this year when the lecturers refused to sign a new contract over delayed salaries.

The lectures were bitter about Kosgei neglecting them on several occasions when they needed him to find solutions to problems affecting the institution.

Students have already left the university premises for their homes, hoping that all will be resolved and learning shall  resume as usual.

They have however pleaded to the Moi University Students Association ( MUSO) headed by the chairman Omari Brian to lias with the Moi University management so that they can resume studies as soon as possible.
