Cyber attacks on the rise in Kenya

The number of cyber threats to companies in Kenya more than doubled to 26.6 million cyber threats between April and June this year.

The latest quarterly report by the Communications Authority of Kenya covering the period between April and June 2019 indicates that the National Kenya Computer incident response team detected increased cases in malware, denial of service, web application attacks as well as system vulnerabilities.

The communications authority has attributed the 136% surge in the number of cyber threat events to the global increase in malware including ransom ware attacks during this period.

In light of the threats the communication authorities’ cyber intelligence department issued 16,347 advisories, representing a 15.3% increase from the 14,174 advisories sent in the previous period.

Early this year, a report by cyber security consulting firm Serianu estimated the cost of cyber crime to Kenya’s economy in 2018 at 29.5 billion shillings.
