Businesswoman Mary Wambui, fugitive in Ksh.2.2 billion tax evasion surrenders

Mary Wambui Mungai and her daughter Purity Njoki Mungai who have been at large over Ksh.2.2 billion tax evasion case finally surrendered and presented themselves before the Mlimani Law Court.

They surrendered hours after they caused a drama at Westin Hotel where police raised the place Wednesday night but managed to dodge the police dragnet.

Mungai and her daughter are the directors of Purma Holdings who have won tenders from state agencies like the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and the military.

The two were arraigned before Anti-corruption Court Magistrate Felix Kombo where they were charged alongside their company Purma Holdings.

“On or before June 30, 2015, in Nairobi County, being a limited liability company registered as a taxpayer and its directors; knowingly and unlawfully omitted from the company’s income tax returns Ksh.2,231,789,125 an amount which should have been included in the income tax returns submitted to the commissioner for the year of income 2014,” reads the charge sheet.

They have changed lawyer to represent them from Sylvanus Osoro to Nelson Havi.

They pleaded not guilty to seven counts of omitting tax returns.

The prosecution has opposed their release on bail arguing that they are likely to abscond court proceedings.

Early Arrest

A warrant of arrest was issued against the two on December 6 for failing to appear in court and answer charges of unpaid taxes amounting to Ksh.2.2 billion.

Mungai and the daughter also failed to honor summons on the same by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
