Sudan’s Prime Minister survives assassination attempt

By Daisy Okanga | Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok survived an assassination attempt, according to a statement released by his office on Monday.

The attack took place at the Northern end of Kober Bridge, which connects the suburb of Khartoum North, the centre of the city.

“An explosion hit as Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s car was driving but thank God no one was hurt,” Ali Bakhit, Office of the Prime Minister reported.

According to his office, the Premier was moved to a safe location and was not injured. No one has since claimed responsibility.

The resilient Premier reiterated a strong march of the people of Sudan and that the attack changes nothing.

“I assure the Sudanese people that am well and completely healthy. What happened will never halt the march for change and will only give an additional boost to the fierce revolutionary wave” Mr. Hamdock   tweeted immediately after the attempt on his life.

The blast came two months after an armed revolt from within Sudan’s forces shut down the capital’s airport and left at least two people dead. The tense stand-off between the armed forces paralyzed street life in several parts of Khartoum, along with other cities.

The attack comes barely a year after he assumed office when he pledged to work towards ending the country’s economic crisis and establishing peace.

Hamdok was appointed Prime Minister in August last year after pro-democracy protests forced the military to remove former ruler Omar al-Bashir.
