Upscaling Universal Health Coverage: Governors sign intergovernmental agreement on UHC

The Ministry of Health on-boarded four more Counties to the Intergovernmental Participation Agreement programme as it continues on its mission to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the country.

The four counties- Kiambu, Kajiado, Elgeyo Marakwet and Narok bring the total of the counties that have signed up for the programme to 15.

Speaking during the signing ceremony between officials from the ministry and representatives from the council of governors, outgoing Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said the upscaling process will be pegged on lessons learnt from the pilot phase of the UHC program initiated in 2018.

A day after President Uhuru Kenyatta reshuffled his cabinet posting Sicily Kariuki in the water sanitation and irrigation docket, the CS performed her last duty on Wednesday in the health docket.

Kariuki met with a section of members on the Council of Governors from Kiambu, Kajiado, Elgeyo Marakwet and Narok to sign the intergovernmental participation agreement programme that ushers in phase 2 of the UHC.

The CS noted that despite shifting of dockets, the achievement of the UHC will need the support of various dockets including her newly acquired one to succeed.

“As I move I look forward to your continued support in the area of water and sanitation. it is important as an enabling factor in the achievement of UHC,” said Kariuki.

Cabinet Secretary for Devolution Eugene Wamalwa who was also present lauded the president’s decision to appoint youth in Chief administrative positions saying the decision is set to breathe new life into the youth empowerment agenda.

I thank the president for injecting new blood into the veins of the government. and I am very proud that for the time we have served with mercy her leadership has been noted and that she is here representing the youth of the country.

The Intergovernmental Participation Agreement seeks to enrol all 47 counties to the universal health coverage programme.
