In February, KPA launched a 5-year plan to improve services at the Mombasa port, targeting to handle 1.599 million between 2018 and 2022. Nearly 5 months later the ports target seem to be taking shape much faster.
In the last five years, container traffic has grown 28.71 percent to 1.3 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUS) last year compared to 1.01 million TEUS handled in 2014.
The port management is currently implementing the second phase of the construction of the second container terminal, which is being constructed on a reclaimed part of an Indian ocean.
Currently, Mombasa is the fifth biggest port in Africa with a capacity of 1.2 million TEUS.
KPA MD, Daniel Manduku, said they had shortened dwell periods and enhanced capacity and that he was happy to announce that almost four months to the end of the year and that they had already surpassed the one million mark.
