A survey sponsored by People’s Health Movement Kenya and conducted by Infotrak research and consulting has shown that 69% of Kenyans are not aware of what universal health coverage pillar under the big four agenda is, with 51% of Kenyans do not have any form of medical insurance.
This comes nearly a year after the government officially launched the pilot UHC program in four counties. On the flipside, since the roll out of UHC in the four pilot counties, 42% of Kenyans have registered for the program.
The survey further showed that 40% of Kenyans rate public health poorly with only 28% giving it thumbs up.
Further to this, 54% of Kenyan households spend up to 10,000 Kshs on health care service annually. For the 49% who have coverage, NHIF account for 89%.
The survey was conducted between the 10th to the 14th of September 2019, in the 4 UHC pilot counties namely Kisumu, Machakos, Isiolo and Nyeri.
