A South African woman has broken Guinness World Record after she gave birth to ten children, according to Pretoria News.
Gosiame Thamara Sithole, 37, who is already a mother of twins, gave birth to seven boys and three girls through Caesarean section at a hospital in Pretoria late Monday.
Her husband, Tebogo Tsotetsi told journalists of the birth of the decuplets late on Monday night.
“It’s seven boys and three girls. She was seven months and seven days pregnant. I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much,”
It comes just a month after a Malian woman, Halima Cisse, gave birth to nine children at a hospital in Morocco, in another case thought to have been caused by fertility treatment.
Cisse, 25, from Timbuktu, was taken to a hospital in the Malian capital of Bamako in March to be kept under observation before being flown to Morocco to be cared for at a specialist hospital after the country’s president intervened.
According to MailOnline, such extreme births are almost always the result of fertility treatments – with multiple fertilized embryos inserted into the womb to increase the chances the patient will fall pregnant.
The children, five girls and four boys, were delivered by a team of 10 doctors and 25 nurses via Caesarean on May 4.
According to Morocco’s news agency, Agense Morocaine De Presse (MAP), a doctor’s report says the babies were born significantly under-weight and had ‘deficiencies in everything’, but are now in a stable condition.
