Likuyani Deputy County Commissioner Charles Mwayaya in Kakamega County has banned selling of roasted maize in the area vowing to take action against those who will violate the new directive.
“There is somebody who refused to go to the shamba and now what he is doing is sneaking into people’s farms and going away with green maize taking them to the market,” Likuyani Deputy County Commissioner Charles Mwayaya said.
Mwayaya said the ban was triggered by increased cases of green maize theft in the area.
Following the escalating theft, the DCC has directed Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to ensure the law is imposed in all markets within Likuyani.
“We are telling chiefs and assistant chiefs that the selling of roasted maize in the market has been put to a stop.”
However, maize vendors from Soy market have criticized the ban saying it will severely hurt them since maize selling is their only source of income.
‘I have sold roasted maize nearly five years now, they should at least found another way of helping us, if they put a ban on the commodity we are the one to feel the pinch because this is where we earn our income to sustain our families,” trader Loyce Barasa, said.
The vendors are now urging the government to lift the ban and allow them to continue with their business as usual.
