Three police officers cornered for aiding Masten Wanjala’s escape

Three police officers have been arrested for allegedly helping a self-confessed serial child killer Masten Wanjala on Wednesday.

The three officers are Police Inspector Philip Mbithi and Police Constables Boniface Mutuma and Precious Mwende all of Jogoo Police Station and are all in custody.

They will be charged with aiding escape from lawful custody and neglect of official duty contrary to section 124 and 128 of the Penal code respectively.

Wanjala who confessed to have killed 10 children escaped the police custody under unclear circumstances.

According to a Nation Africa report, Wanjala escaped from Jogoo Road Police station when officers were processing him for arraignment in Court on Wednesday.

He is said to have escaped unknown time on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Wanjala was yet to take a formal plea into his alleged murder probe.

Police said they had so far linked him to up to 14 murder incidents spanning from Nairobi, Machakos and western Kenya.

Following the developments of his escape from custody, senior police officers visited the station in an effort to understand what happened.

Wanjala was last seen between 6 pm and 7 pm having his dinner in the cell with seven other inmates.

The suspects were having dinner in darkness as there was no light. At around 10 pm the eight inmates were joined by 10 other inmates who had been arrested by police officers.

An hour later two more remandees were brought in bringing the total number of remandees to 20.

According to Citizen Digital report, a roll call taken by an officer who reported on duty eight hours later at 7am revealed that Wanjala was missing although all the other inmates were in the cell.
