South Africa rolls out free transport to vaccination centers for elderly persons

South Africa, the hardest-hit country by the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, has rolled out free transport to vaccination centers for persons aged 50 and over who want to take the jabs.

The project is part o government efforts to ensure more of its population gets vaccinated against the deadly disease.

By Sunday, the country had reported 2,764,931 COVID-19 infections with 81,595 fatalities, both figures by far the biggest recorded on the continent.

The caseload accounts for 35.69 percent of Africa’s total infections while the death toll accounts for 41.86 percent of the continent’s virus-related fatalities.

12,021,609 people have received at least one jab of the life-saving vaccines, representing about 20 percent of the country’s population. Aside from the vaccination drive, the South African government has also rolled out some containment measures, including a ban on large public gatherings and the mandatory wearing of face masks in public spaces.
