The Kenyan Government will now develop a standardised policy for the production of school uniforms in secondary schools.
In a National Assembly proceeding Wednesday, Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei put the question for the state to develop a policy to produce uniforms, in which a majority of present MPs voted in favour.
The standardisation will be formulated by the Ministry of Education, a move that would mean a big relief for thousands of parents.
“This House resolves that the Ministry of Education develops a policy on standardization and production of school uniforms in the country,” read Speaker Sholei.
For a while now, schools have been creating separate school accounts specifically for uniforms, locking out thousands of the poorest within communities whose parents can’t afford them.
The Bill to regulate school uniform pricing was fronted by Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba on March 1, 2023.
The motion confided with a warning from the Education CS Ezekiel Machogu against school heads directing parents to specific stores to purchase uniforms that are more costly than they should be.
“Uniforms shall be the responsibility of parents and no school shall direct parents where to purchase the uniform,” the ministry’s guidelines read.
