Over 1 million youth apply for Kazi Mtaani jobs in under 10 days

Over a million youth in the country have so far registered for the Kazi Mtaani programme, painting a clear picture of how vulnerable the Kenya youth are, searching for jobs.

It is a high record number that has been registered in just eight days since the government rolled out the registration process last Friday.

In a report seen by The Star, State Department of Housing and Urban Development’s data shows that 128,613 people are registering for the programme every day.

Out of one million, Nairobi is leading with 166,00o who have so far registered for the programme since its phase 3 inception, followed by Kiambu at 70,600 then Nakuru at 53,500.

In terms of county registration, 19,053 youths on average per county are registering for

The Kazi Mtaani website crashed barely two hours after the government rolled out the third phase of the programme on Friday, November 19, 2021.

State Department of Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga blamed the crashing of the portal on unprecedented traffic by many Kenyans applying for the opportunities.

“The Kazi Mtaani registration website is experiencing high traffic. The issue is being addressed to allow the high number of youth interested in registering to access,” said Hinga.

The government began the third phase of the initiative last Friday to provide more job opportunities to the youth countrywide.

It aims to factor in at least 3,400 experienced, semi-skilled, and inexperienced youth across all 47 counties.

The opportunities include construction works to complete previously stalled economic stimulus program market, construction works using Appropriate Building Materials and Technologies (ABMT), construction of hostels in selected TVETS, and construction works to remove asbestos roofing in government estates.

This time, the youth are required to register via the Kazi Mtaani Management System portal for transparency and equitable service for everyone.

“I want to assure you that Kazi Mtaani phase three will be bigger and better because we have time to plan well for it. When the pandemic first hit last year, we had to react to ensure that many Kenyans living in informal settlements would not go to bed hungry,” Hinga said.
