Met department warns of heavy rains this weekend

There will be moderate heavy rainfall over several parts of the country in a one-week weather forecast according to Kenya Meteorological Department.

Heavy rainfall of more than 20 mm is expected over several parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, North-western Kenya and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley.

“occasional rains are expected over a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places. Night showers are expected over a few places,” said the Weatherman.

The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours over Western Kenya on Saturday as well as Sunday.

The rainstorm is projected to reduce in intensify and  coverage on Monday, September 20, 2021.

Areas of concern in the Lake Victoria region, the highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Central and the South Rift Valley are Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Siaya and Busia among other areas captured.

Occasional showers are expected over a few places in the Highland East of the Rift Valley that included Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu and Meru counties.

Further, occasional rainfall is also expected over a few areas in the Coast and North-eastern Kenya.

Several areas in the South-Eastern lowland counties such as Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta are expected to be sunny and nights partly cloudy.

Residents in all mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods.

They are warned against driving through or walking in moving water to minimize exposure to lighting strikes.

“Walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lighting strikes.”

People in landslide areas have been urged to be on high alert as updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes.
