Governor Sonko suspends all arrest by his County officers

Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has suspended all arrests by Nairobi City County Government Inspectorate and Enforcement officers.

The move follows an outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country and the Governor said the action is to remain in place until further notice to avert the spread of the virus.

The County boss directed Acting County Secretary Justus Kathenge to facilitate the implementation of the directive with immediate effect.

According to Governor Sonko, operations of all courts of law have been suspended countrywide hence suspects cannot be arraigned within 24 hours as is required by the law.

“Furthermore, many suspects are held in county vehicles for long periods of time before arraignment, and that environment violates WHO guidelines on exposure to Covid-19,”

Government Ministries have also taken up measures as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta to mitigate actions which will help suppress the spread of the virus. The virus has so far affected 3 people.

The Ministry of Land scaled-down all of its operations for the next 14 days.

“All land offices and registries throughout the country will be closed for the next 28 days effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020.” Said Farida Karoney, the Cabinet Secretary of Lands and Physical Planning.

In all possible measures to prevent the spread of the deadly virus which has so far claimed more than 6,000 lives globally, President Kenyatta urged all Government and private institution in the country to enable employees to work from home where possible.
