Kenya and the United Kingdom (U.K.) have agreed to raise KSh. 540 billion to get 175 million children into school around the world.
The agreement was reached during a 45-minute phone call conversation between President Uhuru Kenyatta and U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday.
In their conversation, the President and the British Premier discussed various matters of mutual interest, among which is the Global Education Summit which Kenya and the U.K will co-host in July 2021.
President Kenyatta and PM Johnson talked about Kenya-UK collaboration in the fight against coronavirus, climate change and, regional security and peace.
On coronavirus, President Kenyatta and PM Johnson explored new avenues of collaboration including research on identifying new mutations of the virus and accelerated access to vaccines.
“The leaders discussed the shared challenge of tackling coronavirus and opportunities for collaboration between the UK and Kenya on identifying new variants,” reads a statement from the PM Johnson’s office.
The two leaders expressed concern on the unfolding political situation in Somalia, and resolved to work more closely through the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Commonwealth and other multilateral platforms to ensure regional peace and stability.
On climate change, the two exchanged notes ahead of COP26 in Glasgow and explored opportunities for partnerships in areas such as renewable energy where Kenya is an African success story.
