Court slaps man with 2yrs jail term over smartphone theft

A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing an Infinix smartphone valued at Ksh.23000.

Koire Abdallah pleaded guilty to the theft charges when he was arraigned at Kapenguria Law Courts before the Resident Magistrate Godfrey Okwengu on August 18.

The accused was charged that on August 16, 2021 at a boutique shop in Makutano town, he dishonestly undertook the retention of one mobile phone, Infinix valued at Ksh.23,000 knowing or having reason to believe it to be stolen property.

The court heard that the phone belonged to Lucy Rono who operates the boutique shop and the complainant had visited Rono’s shop posing as a client wanting to purchase a T-shirt but, in the process, he took the complaint’s phone.

The complainant realised her phone was missing and reported the case to the neighbours, and through their assistance, the suspect was arrested and the phone recovered from him.

The suspect was arraigned in court by Kapenguria police station officers on Wednesday.

The accused pleaded for the court’s forgiveness while promising never to repeat the offence but the court went ahead and handed  him the two-year sentence.

The accused was granted 14 days’ right to appeal the sentence.
