Kenya records 10 new fatalities from COVID-19

Kenya has recorded 10 new fatalities arising from COVID-19, raising the country’s cumulative fatalities to 3,013.

According to the latest update from the National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus (NERC), three of the reported deaths occurred on diverse dates within the last one month while seven are late deaths reported after conducted facility record audits within the last one month.

Seven of the new fatalities were of individuals aged 60 years and above.

Kenya has so far lost 1,561 individuals aged 60 years and above.

At the same time, 72 people have tested positive to COVID-19 from a sample size of 2,056 tested in the last 24 hours. The new cases translate to a positivity rate of 3.5 percent.

From the new cases, 63 are Kenyans and 9 are foreigners.

“45 are males and 27 females. The youngest is a one-year-old baby while the oldest is 84.” said Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe. 

The new cases have pushed the cumulative confirmed cases to 165,537.

In terms of county distribution, 28 of the new cases are in Nairobi, followed by 22 in Mombasa. Busia recorded 9 cases, Kilifi 9, with Embu and Homa Bay Counties recording 2 cases each. Kwale, Laikipia, Machakos, Nakuru and Kiambu Counties confirmed 1 case each.

Meanwhile, 1,036 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,729 are under the Home-based Isolation and Care programme.

CS Kagwe added, “108 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 23 of whom are on ventilator support and 70 on supplemental oxygen. 15 are under observation.”

Another 84 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 79 of them ins general wards and 5 in High Dependency Units (HDU).
