73.2% of 4.3 M captured signatures supported BBI Bill

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill, 2020 has been given a nod to continue to be debated after the confirmation and verification of collected signatures by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)

According to IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, 3,188,001 signatures out of 4,3525,037 million captures signatures were confirmed and verified, denoting 73.2 percent of registered voters who signed to support the BBI Bill.

“The Commission, upon verification of supporters records, confirms that the initiative has been supported by a total 3,188,001 registered voters.” Said Chebukati in a statement.

IEBC on December 10 last year, received forms both in soft and hard copies from the supporters of the Kenyan Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2020.

By January 19, the Commission said an interim report based on over 1.7 records verified established that the initiative was supported by 1,140,845 registered voters.

This, however, according to the IEBC, paved way for the Bill to be debated before all 47 county assemblies.

“This formed the basis of transmission of the draft Bill to each of the 47 county assemblies on 26 January 2021.”

Among the key issues, the report is expected to address, include corruption, inclusivity in government as well as the conduction of general elections.

So far, the Bill has been passed in 12 county assemblies and rejected in one; Baringo County.

The Samburu County Assembly on Monday was the latesf to pass the BBI Bill, becoming the twelfth assembly in Kenya to do so.

In Nairobi, MCAs passed the Bill unanimously, with the 114 legislators present voting in its support.

Laikipia County so far is the only County from Mt. Kenya to have approved the Constitutional of Kenya (Amendment)) Bill, 2020.
