Kenya’s retired President Daniel Arap Moi is dead

Kenya’s retired President Daniel Toroirich Arap Moi is dead.

The announcement on Moi’s death was made on Tuesday morning by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Moi has been in and out of hospital for several years though he enjoyed good health during and after his presidency.

He died aged 95.

Moi’s Health concerns

He underwent knee surgery at the Aga Khan Hospital in January 2017 after he developed complications following a road accident in 2006.

On November 8, 2019, Moi went back to Nairobi Hospital barely two days after he was discharged.

The family spokesperson Lee Njiru said the former Head of State was returned to the hospital to undergo a routine check-up.

On March 11, 2018, Moi was flown to Israel for what was termed as medical checK-up.

In a statement then, from the former head of State’s office said Moi had been booked at a hospital in Tel Aviv for a check-up on his knee.

“Mzee Moi is accompanied by his physician Dr David Silverstein and his son Senator Gideon Moi,” the brief statement read.

In October 2019, there were reports that Mr. Moi had been admitted to the Nairobi Hospital though his Press Secretary denied the claims.

His love for politics

Despite his health concerns over the past few years, Mzee Moi, alias ‘professor of politics’ could still receive visitors (Politicians) at his Kabarak home in Baringo County.

They included Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Salva Kiir (South Sudan), former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and even Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli.In October this year, there were reports that Mr. Moi had been admitted to the same hospital though his Press Secretary denied the claims.

Moi leaves behind seven children: Gideon (Baringo Senator), Raymond (Rongai MP), Jeniffer, June, Philip, John-Mark and Doris.

Their mother Lena Moi separated with Mzee Moi in 1974. She died in 2004.
