Kenya's Treasury Orders Comprehensive Audit of Pending Bills

The pending bills verification committee, established in June 2023, has since reviewed Ksh.664 billion in claims, approving only Ksh.206 billion for payment due to insufficient documentation for the remaining amounts.

The Kenyan Treasury has initiated an additional audit of outstanding government debts (pending bills), which have escalated to Ksh.706 billion as of December 2024.

The National Treasury is looking at ways of enhancing financial transparency and accountability as the government transitions from cash-based to accrual accounting.

The pending bills verification committee, established in June 2023, has since reviewed Ksh.664 billion in claims, approving only Ksh.206 billion for payment due to insufficient documentation for the remaining amounts.

The new audit, led by the Auditor-General, aims to scrutinize these liabilities further, ensuring that only legitimate debts are settled.

This additional audit introduces another layer of scrutiny for companies awaiting payment, potentially prolonging the settlement process.

However, it also offers businesses an opportunity to validate their claims and ensure compliance with the required documentation standards.

Government entities were required to reconcile their records with supplier statements by June 30, 2024, to establish accurate opening balances for the new financial year.

The Auditor-General’s office will then audit these balances to confirm their legitimacy.
