Peter Okong’o, former Deputy Managing Editor and journalist at Standard Group, has passed away. Friends and former colleagues from Standard Group and other organizations shared their grief upon learning of his passing on the morning of October 31, 2024.
Okong’o dedicated over seven years to the Mombasa Road-based media house from 2011 before transitioning to the Central Bank of Kenya as a consultant. His former colleague, Masoku Geoffrey, remembered him as a “fine gentleman and a good editor,” expressing heartfelt condolences to his family.
Okong’o’s passing has also drawn tributes from Catherine Riungu and Wilfred Ayaga, who praised his dedication at the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board and recalled his supportive nature at the Nation Media Group (NMG) business desk.
Riungu reflected on his memorable work ethic, saying, “At NMG, you were an ever-smiling editor, extremely supportive of writers.” Ayaga added, “A good man has rested. You treated me well when I was still finding my feet in the newsroom.”
A Notable Career in Media
Okong’o had an extensive media career that began after completing his postgraduate studies in Journalism at the University of Nairobi in 1996.
He joined Nation Media Group in 2003 as a business desk editor and moved to Standard Group in 2008. Rising through the ranks, he became the Senior Associate Business Editor and, by 2011, was promoted to Deputy Managing Editor.
Okong’o’s colleagues remember him for his professionalism, warmth, and dedication to his work. His contributions to Kenyan journalism will be fondly remembered by all who knew and worked with him.
