
Safaricom-owned M-Pesa has announced Ksh.20 million sponsorship for the second edition of the magical Kenya ladies golf open.
The tournament by u.com event is part of the ladies European tour and will take place from 10th-13th February at the Vpingo ridge, baobab course in Kilifi county, the only UK PGA accredited golf course in Africa
The event is a follow-up from the first edition that was held in 2019, where the telco was a key sponsor to the event that brings together Kenya’s pro and amateur golfers.
“We are honoured to be part of the ladies’ European tour-the first event of the 2022 season-which makes a return to the country and east Africa for the second time. The tournament provides Kenyan lady golfers an opportunity to grow in the sport and we look forward to seeing the playersin action” said Peter Ndegwa, Chief Executive of Safaricom.
Since its inception in 1978, the event has crowned more than 250 winners with 700 championship trophies by players from over 30 counties.
The tournament will be a 72-stroke play golf competition with over 100 players that are set to take to the course over four days and the final two days of play with a field cut to 60
Open titleholder Esther Henseleit and South African star Lee Ann Pace will be among those scheduled to participate.
Meanwhile, the Kenya team will comprise Naomi Wafula and Mercy Nyamchama as the lead golfers alongside 14-year old Chanelle Wangari of vet lab and Faith Chemtai of Nandi Bears
