Four people died and several others sustained severe injuries Wednesday morning in a horror-crash involving a Mombasa-bound passenger bus and a trailer at Manyani area in Voi along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The bus, owned by Dreamline Bus Company, with 44 passengers on board was attempting to overtake a trailer when it rammed on the right-side edge of the container.
The impact destabilized the speeding bus which swerved on the path of an incoming trailer heading to Nairobi leading to a head-on collision.
The drivers of both vehicles died on the spot. A female passenger on the front seat of the bus and the trailer’s conductor also perished in the accident.
Confirming the accident, Voi Sub-County Police Commander Bernastein Shari said five more people sustained severe injuries, while many others had light tissue injuries.
“The injured have been rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital for treatment. A probe has started on this tragic incident,” said Shari.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Moi County Referral Hospital morgue awaiting postmortem.
Meanwhile, a second non-fatal accident was also reported at Maungu area along the busy highway, involving a Smart Coach Matatu and a canter truck.
Police reports say the passenger matatu had rammed on the rear of a canter truck that had slowed down due to bumps on the road.
The Smart Coach driver and one passenger sustained injuries and were rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital.
The wreckage of the vehicles was towed to Voi Police station.
