How to apply for digital number plate if you are motorbike owner

The National Transport and Safety Authority launched a new system of number plates – digital plates last year to enhance security features.

The application applies for two set categories, vehicles and motorbikes.

Acquiring a new plate, however, comes at a fee. NTSA cut the application rate for a motorcycle at Ksh.1,150.

Everything is being digitalised including applying for a plate, a process that is online-enabled.

Here are the steps;

-Visit NTSA website and select vehicle registration and apply for reflective plate.

-Select vehicle and click next.

-Select reason i.e new registration plate

-Select notification method, e.g, SMS

-Choose number plate and format (square or oblong)

-Upload in PDF, original logbook and plates (rear)

-Select the collection centre and enter ID number of the person to collect the plate.

-Make payment of Ksh.1, 150.

-The finally, collection notification will be sent via SMS.

“Motorcycle/motor vehicle owners will receive SMS notifications upon verification & approval of the applications,” according to NTSA.

The new number plates were rolled out to enforce security features such as a hologram, watermark, unique and different serial numbers for rear and front plates and a specially-imprinted national flag.

Plate registration dates commenced on October 1, 2022.

Motorists who fail to change the number plates within the 18 months deadline will also attract a penalty of Ksh.20,000.
