IEBC declares last day for public servants eying political seats

Public servants who are seeking to vie for various political seats during this year’s General Elections have until 11:59 to vacate their seats, according to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

This will ensure the electoral body has enough time to undertake its processes to avoid its calendar interference.

“We therefore fully agree with the findings of (Justice Isaac) Lenaola, J. in the Charles Omanga petition of the necessity for public officers desirous running for elective posts to resign in good time,” Justices Daniel Musinga, Wanjiru Karanja, and Agnes Murgor said.

At Least seven Cabinet Secretaries in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration have declared their interest to vie for various political seats ahead of the August 9, elections.

Some of them include Treasury CS Ukur Yatani who is eyeing Marsabit County’s top job, Agriculture CS Peter Munya eyeing for Meru governor’s seat, Petroleum CS John Munyes, Devolution CS Charles Keter.

Other public servants who have hung their boots to seek political seats are President Kenyatta’s Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS).

They include; Infrastructure CAS Chris Obure, Lands Chief Administrative Secretary Gideon Mungaro, Tourism CAS Joseph Boinnet (governor of Elgeyo Marakwet), Labour and Social Protection CAS Patrick Ole Ntutu  (Narok County governor).

Petroleum CAS Eng. John Mosonik has also resigned to seek the Bomet governor.

Other CASs are Wavinya Ndeti (Transport) who will vie for Machakos gubernatorial seat, Hassan Noor Hassan (Education) will seek to be the next Mandera governor using ODM ticket, Gideon Mung’aro (Devolution) wants to take over from Amason Kingi as Kilifi governor, Ken Obura (East African Community) who is seeking to be the next Kisumu governor.

The massive resignation of President Kenyatta’s cabinet will prompt a cabinet reshuffle to replace those who have vacated.

Experts opine that existing CASs might be forced to play a double role to fill vacant posts, to avoid questions of trust within the President’s administration, as he exists office.
