NMS targets 5 estates for facelift in Nairobi
At least 2,000 houses in various residential estates have been allocated by Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) for renovation.
The estates include Buruburu, Kariobangi South, Jamhuri and Kariokor which have at least 760 targeted units while Uhuru Estate has 884 targeted units set to undergo similar modernization.
The renovation which began in May last year in collaboration with the County Government will include repainting the buildings to meet the municipal standards required for all structures and buildings.
NMS director- general Mohamed Badi stated that the renovation project will be rolled out under the Ward Development Fund (WDF) kitty which received an allocation of Ksh.1.5billion in this financial year with projects under the fund now being managed by NMS.
“ In Kariokor Estate, the exercise is being undertaken in collaboration with the area MCA Ward Development Fund,” said Badi.
In order to come up with accurate data of the 16,700 county-owned houses and verify the real tenants of the houses, NMS is continuing with inventory of county houses to enhance revenue collection.
The remaining lot of the project is set to be carried out before the end of the fiscal year which will target over 360 housing units in Outering Estate.
