Siaya seeks to boost animal feeds production
The County Government of Siaya has partnered with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS), Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Agricultural Sector Support Development Programme (ASDSP II), to boost the animal feeds enterprise.
The County CEC for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Elizabeth Odhiambo, said the partnership decision was reached after a survey indicated that much of the standard feeds sold in the area came from outside, yet the locals had the potential to suffice the market.
Speaking at a meeting with animal feeds millers, the CEC said only half of the required 4,000 tonnes of feed annually, was produced in the area.
Dr. Odhiambo said in the partnership, KeBS would certify the feeds produced, the County Government will issue licenses, as ASDSP and KCCI set up marketing structures.
To meet the required production standards, the millers should buy the recommended machinery and mix the feeds materials in the required ratios along with other guidelines, said the CEC.
She urged more entrepreneurs to exploit the feed shortage in the County, as this would boost the County’s economy and create more employment opportunities.
The CEC added that production of quality feeds helps in boosting livestock production for higher incomes and to prevent infections.
