India reports nearly 4,000 daily COVID-19 deaths as cases hit 21 million

India set a new global record Thursday after the country registered its highest single-day rise in coronavirus infections of over 412,000 in the last 24 hours. 

The Government of India reported 412,262 new cases, pushing the country’s total number of infections to more than 21 million.

Cumulative fatalities have now hit 230,168 after a record 3,980 new fatalities were reported on Thursday.  

It is the second day the South Asian nation has reported more than 400,000 daily cases after it registered 401,993 daily infections on Saturday.
